Yesterday MediaTakeOut’s Facebook page was unpublished. At the time it was taken down, our page had 5.6 million followers.

MediaTakeOut reaches more than 30 million people each month. Along with our Facebook reach, we are the most viewed African American news agency in the world.

After the 2016 election, we made the editorial decision to include more political and social impact stories on MediaTakeOut. Often the stories went viral, and many resulted in social change. For example, as a direct result of our reporting on police brutality, at least 3 police officers were removed from their jobs for misconduct.

But this editorial change had consequences. Our site and social media pages have been under constant attack – by a coordinated and calculated efforts by White supremacists to shut us down.

The vigilant group of White supremacists, who coordinate online, have been flagging our articles hundreds of times each day on Facebook and Twitter. Their goal was to allege false “Community Guidelines” violations, until Facebook would be forced to remove our page.

Yesterday their efforts worked, and Facebook unpublished our page. We’re currently working with Facebook to get our page reinstated, but it’s not clear that we will be successful.

So where do we go from here. We’ve decided to take a lesson from African American history.

In 1921, a group of White supremacists attacked the thriving community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The White supremacists were furious that a thriving community of African Americans existed. So they burned the community down, killing hundreds and leaving 10,000 people homeless.

Like the folks of Greenwood, we’re going to do the only thing we can, rebuild. But not just rebuild, we’re goin to do things better.

In that vein, we commit that on our new page at least 50% of the content will be news that has a positive social or political impact.

And we humbly ask that you join us.
